The success of the shipbuilding sector and individual shipyards depends on the potential ship owners see in a certain market and their success therein. The success of these markets depend on the macroeconomic developments in the world, which include the purely economic development, but also the introduction and entering into force of new regulations.

The C3ME-model is created to simulate macroeconomic developments and to translate these into micro-economic optimisations. Currently only the dry bulk sector is included in the microeconomic optimisation. Extensions are continuously made to this model, as well as updates to the data and its equations based on new research and insights.

The Maritime Business Game uses the outcome of this model to simulate a consistent environment for companies to operate in. Currently the type of company is limited to dry bulk shipping. However, work is performed on an extension towards shipyards. The game is used to teach students about the strong link that exist between technology, macro economy and business goals (micro economy) and how all need to be balanced and understood to optimise the performance of the company. In the future the potential of studying the behaviour of students as input for research in understanding company behaviour will be considered as well.
