This research focused on the development of a simulation-based tool that can be used in detailed design planning and management in made-to-order shipbuilding. The tool delivers scheduling information for engineering activities, including quantitative risk analysis of engineering process performance. This should help engineering process managers in (re)consideration, calculation and visualisation of different scenarios of engineering processes. Also tracking possibilities for both progress in activities and engineering deliverables should come within reach. Much emphasis in this research is on the development of modelling methods. Models are setup following fixed configurations and using standard 'building bricks'. Because only a limited number of engineering task types are used, an off-the-shelf object oriented simulation package can be used as the core of the tool. Using layered model structures makes it possible to realise the necessary voluminous and complicated models. The chosen modelling approach facilitates the possibility to operate the involved simulation models without specialist programming and/or simulation knowledge, which is of course an important condition for successful implementation in a working environment.
